Ecology and Conservation of the La Plata dolphin in Argentina

Currently, the La Plata dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei) is the most threatened cetacean species in the South Atlantic Ocean. More than 500 individuals, mainly females and their offspring, are being incidentally caught during coastal fishing operations in Argentina. A similar situation occurs in Uruguay and Brazil.

Objectives:

- To reduce the fishery impact working in association with local fishing communities.
- To estimate abundance.
- To assess the ecology and behavior.
- To implement a Conservationist Campaign through environmental education.
- To enforce better protection laws for the La Plata dolphin in Argentina.
